Despite the update, McConnell's office has not revealed what caused the hospitalization.
The office of Kentucky senator and former senate leader Mitch McConnell has been guarded about his current condition after a June 14 medical emergency landed him in the hospital. They revealed that the 84-year-old senator is improving and that he is working closely with the staff on Kentucky and Senate matters. It was in June that emergency workers responded to a cardiac arrest at McConnell's home and had to revive him.
McConnell's office has not revealed what caused the hospitalization, what treatment he is receiving, or whether he is expected to return when the Senate reconvenes on July 13. Requests for additional information have been met with referrals to the previous statement. He's been hospitalized for three weeks.
Questions surrounding the incident have grown following reports from multiple news outlets. According to NBC News, emergency-dispatch audio from June 14 showed first responders being sent to an address linked to McConnell after receiving a report of an unconscious person. The New York Times later reported that radio traffic referenced "CPR in progress." Neither outlet identified McConnell as the patient, and his office has declined to comment on the recordings or confirm details of the emergency.
Following the hospitalization, John Thune said he had spoken with McConnell and described him as fully engaged with Senate business despite his absence, per ABC News. Senate Republican Whip John Barrasso also said he had been in contact with the longtime senator.
McConnell's absence comes as Senate Republicans hold only a narrow majority, making attendance especially important for advancing legislation. Reports show his absence contributed to the postponement of a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing because Republicans needed his vote to help move several spending bills forward, per Bloomberg.
Some say that the lawmaker isn't coming back and is brain dead with Trump confidant Laura Loomer citing close White Houses sources on X.
"Mitch McConnell is being kept 'alive' by life support machines," Loomer said, "but my White House source told me McConnell is in organ failure, and as I reported, source told me he has allegedly been declared a vegetable (brain dead) by doctors and the White House has been told 'McConnell isn’t ever coming back.' Officially brain dead, organ failure is accelerating, life support machine is keeping him 'alive' but his brain is officially dead and his wife has fled the country to China."
McConnell, who stepped down as Senate Majority Leader in 2025 after becoming the longest-serving party leader in Senate history, had previously announced that he will retire when his current term ends in January. His latest hospitalization follows several recent health setbacks, including a concussion suffered in 2023 and multiple falls in the years since.
