Dems float plan to replaces Platner in Maine Senate race with a less scandal-plagued candidate

Platner’s scandals include a Nazi tattoo that the Senate candidate claimed he got in 2007 while serving in the Marine Corps. He maintains the tattoo happened as a result of a drunken night in Croatia.

New Jersey Representative Josh Gottheimer told CNN’s John Berman that recently nominated Democratic senatorial candidate Graham Platner should leave the race and request his name be removed from the ballot. Gottheimer then went on to suggest that Platner would not fare well in what he represents.

"In Jersey, we'd throw him off the ballot or bury him under the Meadowlands,’ Gottheimer told CNN anchor John Berman. ‘I mean, I don't understand how somebody like this is going to represent our party. And I think the best action would be for him to leave and get somebody else who's qualified onto the ballot.”

When asked by Berman if Platner chose to stay on the ballot, would he suggest his friends vote for Susan Collins, he said: “I don't think that's going to be the choice. So I'm not going to do that hypothetical. I think that he's going to get off the ballot soon.”

Platner has been plagued with a multitude of scandals that leave his now general election opponent, Republican Susan Collins, leading in polls but has yet to be subjected to the full weight of a Republican money machine that is no doubt eager to run negative ads on his past.

Platner also has been hit with a recent New York Times piece that included accounts from former girlfriends alleging abuse and mistreatment.

The controversy comes as party strategists weigh the competitiveness of the seat and the potential impact on down-ballot races, with fundraising and messaging expected to escalate as the general election approaches and outside groups begin to engage more heavily in the contest.
