Moderna will provide 12 million doses of its Omicron variant Covid vaccine to Canada, according to a statement released on Monday.

The Trudeau Liberals entered a deal with Moderna in 2021 for 2022 and 2023, with the contract providing Canada with vaccine adaptations.

Reuters reports that Canada and Moderna agreed to "convert six million doses of the company's COVID-19 vaccine, which targets the original virus, to an Omicron-containing bivalent vaccine."

An additional 4.5 million doses of the Omicron-containing vaccine will be purchased by Canada. 1.5 million doses of the vaccine will reach Canada in 2023.

Current vaccines have wained in efficacy as the virus evolved, with Moderna saying that trial data shows when given as a fourth dose, the variant-adapted vaccine booster raises irus-neutralizing antibodies by eight-fold against Omicron.
