A top official with the White House issued a warning concerning millennials on Wednesday. She noted that more millennials in France and Italy have become sick after failing to listen to warnings about avoiding large gatherings. This is thought to be due to initial warnings being directed towards the elderly, reported New York Post.

At a daily briefing at the White House Dr. Deborah Birx said, “There are concerning reports coming out of France and Italy about some young people getting seriously ill, and very seriously ill, in the ICU.”

“We think part of this may be that people heeded the early data coming out of China and coming out of South Korea about the elderly or those with pre-existing medical conditions were at particular risk,” said Birx.

“It may have been that the millennial generation, our largest generation, our future generation, that will carry us through for the next multiple decades—there may be a disproportionate number of infections among that group. and so, even if it’s a rare occurrence, it may be seen more frequently in that group and be evident now.”

She added that millennials should avoid large gatherings that continue to happen due to a false sense of security.

President Trump also weighed in on the subject saying, “We don’t want them gathering, and I see they do gather, including on beaches and in restaurants, young people. They don’t realize, and they’re feeling invincible.”

“I don’t know if you felt invincible when you were very young, but they were feeling totally invincible, or are feeling that way, but they don’t realize that they could be carrying lots of bad things home to grandmother and grandfather and even their parents. so, we want them to heed the advice,” said Trump.

Birx noted that there have not been a significant amount of deaths among young people in America yet.

“We have not seen any significant mortality in the children, but we are concerned about the early reports coming out of Italy and France. So again, I’m going to call on that generation … not only calling on you to heed what’s in the guidance, but to really ensure that each and every one of you are protecting each other,” she said.

“We cannot have these large gatherings that continue to occur throughout the country for people who are off work to then be socializing in large groups and spreading the virus.”

These warnings come after thousands of college students in America continue to come together for spring break and other gatherings.

Many ignored warnings from the WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and showed up for a festival in Miami. NBC News reported that many have since tested positive for the virus.
