During his appearance on The View on Monday, Dr. Phil McGraw took co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Whoopi Goldberg to task over their defense of state government's decisions to close schools and prevent children from attending in-person classes during the Covid-19 pandemic.
McGraw pushed back on the claim that keeping kids isolated from others, and by extension the virus, was in their best interest, arguing that very few people under 18 had any real risk of suffering if they were to have caught the virus. Children were revealed to not be vectors for the virus and to not be particularly susceptible to it.
McGraw pointed out that there had been a spike in cases of anxiety and depression among teenagers in 2008 when smart phones became popular, and that that trend continued for the next decade.
"Then Covid hits ten years later, and the same agencies that knew that are the same agencies that shut down the schools for two years," he continued. "Who does that? Who takes away the support system for these children?"
McGraw went on to point out that perhaps worst of all, children who were being abused by their supposed guardians were simply sent home to their abusers by the government.
"There was also a pandemic going on," one of the co-hosts replied.
"We were trying to save kids lives," Goldberg added. "Remember we know a lot of folks who died during this–"
"Not school children," McGraw interjected.
Goldberg suggested that it was because children had been kept away from others that they hadn't suffered as much as other demographics.
When asked whether he was claiming that no school children died of Covid, McGraw clarified that he meant it was "the safest group."
The Centers for Disease Control in the US reported that less than 1,700 children in the US died from causes "involving Covid."
CDC data shows that only 1,696 children in the US suffered a death involving Covid up to September 2023.
"They were were the least vulnerable group," he said, "and they suffered, and will suffer more from the mismanagement of Covid than they will from the exposure to Covid, and that's not an opinion, that's a fact."
When McGraw concluded his statements, the audience clapped. Before the panel could respond, however, the show ended.
