Netflix has hired a convicted stalker to be an expert on its upcoming docuseries on the Zodiac Killer, one of California's most infamous unidentified serial killers who murdered at least five victims in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s.

Tom Voigt, of Columbia City, Oregon, has been tapped to offer his so-called expertise after developing an obsession with the Zodiac Killer, where he has run a decades-long blog working to uncover the murderer's identity and more facts about the case. However, his previous convictions have generated attention, prompting some to doubt Netflix's hiring decision.

Not only did Voigt propose to his wife Angie in 2018 at the site of the first Zodiac killing, but he was also convicted in 2005 of four counts of stalking and violating a protection order in Oregon. The court granted him probation and he was ordered to complete 160 hours of community service, court records show, per the Daily Mail. Voigt was also charged with prostitution in 1991 for soliciting sexual services.

In 2018, Reddit users confronted Voigt over the stalking charge on his forum dedicated to the Zodiac Killer. He has also been criticized for profiting off the victims' deaths by selling Zodiac Killer merchandise. Voigt was featured in a 2004 photograph with his friends posing with his merchandise to commemorate the 35th anniversary of a young couple killed at the site near Lake Berryessa, as per the Daily Mail.

In one of the photos, Voigt's friend could be seen wearing a woman's thong that had a photo of Arthur Leigh Allen, the only potential suspect to be named by law enforcement as the Zodiac Killer. He was a convicted sex offender from California who died in 1992 at the age of 58. The upcoming docu-series set to be released on Oct. 23 is centered around Allen.

It's unclear if Netflix knew of Voigt's prior convictions. The streaming service did not respond to requests for comment.
