Melinda Gates is leaving the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and will be getting a large sum from her ex-husband as part of the deal.

She will be receiving $12.5 billion from her ex-husband and founder of Microsoft, according to a statement online.

In the statement she wrote, "After careful thought and reflection, I have decided to resign from my role as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. My last day of work at the foundation will be June 7th."

"This is not a decision I came to lightly. I am immensely proud of the foundation that Bill and I built together and of the extraordinary work it is doing to address inequities around the world. I care deeply about the foundation team, our partners around the world, and everyone who is touched by its work," she added.

Melinda Gates added that she has confidence in the leadership team that will be continuing its work.

“Under the terms of my agreement with Bill, in leaving the foundation, I will have an additional $12.5 billion to commit to my work on behalf of women and families. I'll be sharing more about what that will look like in the near future,” the ex-wife of Bill Gates concluded.

Bill and Melinda Gates divorced in 2021 and their foundation was launched in 2000.

The organization has recently come under fire for environmental initiatives such as making a vaccine to reduce methane gas from cows. The foundation invested $26.5 million into the project. Additionally, the foundation has funded educational curriculum, created by the organization "Pathway" that teaches that math is "racist."
