NEW: Senator Lankford attacks Elon Musk over 'Teslas being recalled' after he criticizes border bill

Musk had said that "the long-term goal of the so-called 'Border Security' bill is enabling illegals to vote."

On Monday, Sen. James Lankford took aim at Elon Musk for claiming that the bipartisan national security bill currently making its way through Congress would result in more illegal immigrants being able to vote in United States elections.

The Republican senator suggested that Musk ought to be worrying instead about the 2 million Teslas that were recently recalled.

"Here's a claim being circulated on Twitter by Elon Musk," CNN's Jake Tapper began, quoting the Tesla CEO's post. "The long-term goal of the so-called 'Border Security' bill is enabling illegals to vote! It will do the total opposite of securing the border."

"Now I know that Elon Musk is not an expert on illegal immigration or the border, but he has a huge megaphone," Tapper continued. "Explain what he's talking about here. Is he wrong?"

Lankford responded by suggesting Musk should "go back to doing the 2 million Teslas that are currently being recalled right now." The Tesla recall, announced earlier this month, affects more than 2 million vehicles, and concerns small font sizes on warning panels which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says could increase the risk of a crash, Forbes reported.

"No it's not focused on trying to be able to get more illegals to vote, that's absurd. It's against the law for anyone that is not a citizen of the United States to be able to vote in the United States in any federal election. Obviously, we're not dealing with that."

Musk has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration's handling of the crisis at the southern border, and in recent days the aforementioned bill has been the target of his ire. He has reposted numerous breakdowns of how the bill may not only not help fix things, but potentially even make the situation worse.

He has zeroed in on the claim that Democrats are just trying to import voters.

"In the 'bet-you-didn’t-know' category," Musk wrote in a post that has since been pinned, "Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas issued written guidance making it clear that: 1. Illegal presence alone is not grounds for deportation. 2. Criminal charges, convictions or gang membership alone are not enough for deportation."

"You basically have to be a convicted axe murderer to be deported!" he added. "That's because every deportation is a lost vote."
