President Donald Trump has said that Canada is "considering" an offer to become the 51st state in order to avoid paying billions to be protected by the Trump administration's installation of the US "Golden Dome." If Canada remains separate, the nation will have to pay $61 billion to be protected by the defense system.

"I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!" Trump posted to Truth Social.

The comments from Trump about the potential deal with Canada over Golden Dome come after the White House announced that the US will be investing $175 billion into the defense system, which will reportedly have the ability to intercept not just missiles and projectiles from other locations around the world, but also from outer space.

Trump has appointed Space Force General Michael Guetlein to oversee the project that is set to secure the nation for generations to come.

Guetlein added at the time of the announcement, "We owe it to our children and our children's children to protect them and afford them a quality of life that we have all grown up enjoying. Golden Dome will afford that.”

Trump has continuously joked about Canada becoming the 51st state, which has become a talking point in Canadian politics. Just hours before Trump made the post, King Charles made comments striking back at the suggestion during a visit to Ontario, Canada.
