When speaking to reporters, Trump asked the press, "Do you want the truthful answer or should I give you a political answer?" when it came to imposing tariffs on the EU. He added that he would “absolutely” impose the tariffs.
"The European Union has treated us so terribly," Trump added. Trump made the comments after he had signed a number of executive orders in the White House. Earlier on Friday, Karline Leavitt confirmed that there would be tariffs imposed on Canada, China, and Mexico starting on Saturday.
When a reporter cited an article that said the Canada and Mexico tariffs would get pushed back from the Feb. 1 date to March 1, Leavitt replied, "I saw that report and it is false. I was just with the President in the Oval Office and I can confirm that tomorrow, the February 1 deadline that President Trump put into place in a statement several weeks ago continues."
Trump has cited concerns over immigration as well as fentanyl coming over the border from Mexico and Canada as the main reason for the tariffs. China, as well, is slated to get hit with the tariff because of its contributions to the fentanyl coming into the United States.
"The President will be implementing tomorrow a 25 percent tariffs on Mexico, 25 percent tariffs on Canada, and a 10 percent tariff on China for the illegal fentanyl that they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country, which has killed tens of millions of Americans," Leavitt added earlier on Friday.
Trump has frequently used tariffs as leverage, and when the Columbia did not take back a group of illegal immigrants being deported to the country, the threat of a tariff got the Columbian government to accept the flight.
