Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned the tariffs as “reckless” and vowed to respond.
According to a report by The Globe and Mail, the Canadian government has been informed these tariffs will be implemented and is awaiting the details of the executive order before commenting or deciding on potential retaliatory measures. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to address the issue later on Saturday.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned the tariffs as “reckless” and vowed to respond. In a press conference, Ford said that Trump has “chosen to tear up decades of goodwill that has made life better for workers on both sides of the border.” He added that imposing tariffs “is not a smart move, it’s selfish. This not only hurts Canadians, it hurts your own people.”
“It hurts you and your administration. It makes America poorer,” he said in regards to Trump.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico due to the amount of illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking going through the nation's borders. Trump has since stated that he is going forward with implementing tariffs regardless of any concessions made by these countries.
