As the war between Israel and Hamas rages on, experts at the New York State Intelligence Center have warned that the Empire state could be a potential target for Islamic terrorist attacks.

In the weeks since the Iranian-backed Palestinian terrorist group launched its latest wave of violence in the Jewish state on October 7, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has earmarked $2.5 million to help ramp up security and ensure that the Joint Terrorism Task Force has the staff necessary to properly detect potential threats.

According to CBS News, the center noted in its threat assessment that evidence pointed to an "increasing terror threat to NYS."

"The expansion of Israeli operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip and increase in civilian casualties raises the likelihood that violent extremist threat actors will seek to conduct attacks against targets in the West, with New York State being a focus," the report explained. "Terrorist messaging has placed focus on attacking 'soft targets' such as protests, group gatherings, and other public events."

The report also noted that in recent weeks, both antisemitic and anti-Palestinian sentiments online have helped fuel an increase in hate crimes targeting Jews and Muslims alike.

Hochul emphasized that the threats were not limited to New York City, and that she and her team were "working with all law enforcement, federal, state, and local."

On Tuesday, she announced a "four-pillar plan" to keep residents safe from extremism, which included increasing security at physical locations, making the digital world safer, calling out social media companies who have "failed their responsibility to create a safe public square," and creating resources for parents and schools to assist them in preventing the spread of harmful ideas.

In a statement, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray explained that the United States' "immediate concern is that violent extremists, individuals or small groups, will draw inspiration from the events in the Middle East to carry out attacks against Americans going about their daily lives."

"That includes not just homegrown violent extremists, inspired by a foreign terrorist organization, but also domestic violent extremists targeting Jewish or Muslim communities," he added, citing the case of an individual who was recently arrested in Houston, Texas for expressing support of killing Jews and an interest in making bombs.
