The New York Times reporter who received criticism last year for praising Adolf Hitler in several Facebook posts has been rehired by the Gray Lady to cover the Israel-Hamas war.
Soliman Hijjy was rehired by the New York Times last week and has appeared in bylines nearly every day since Oct. 12, according to the New York Post. His most recent story was published on Thursday while reporting from Gaza.
"At a hospital in southern Gaza, a backup generator becomes a critical lifeline," he wrote in the piece, referring to a facility near the Ahli Arab hospital bombing, which was bombed by a Palestinian terror group but Israel was falsely blamed for the attack.
A spokesperson with NYT defended the paper's decision to rehire Hijjy in a statement to the Post.
"We reviewed problematic social media posts by Mr. Hijjy when they first came to light in 2022 and took a variety of actions to ensure he understood our concerns and could adhere to our standards if he wished to do freelance work for us in the future," said the spokesperson.
The New York Times was called out by pro-Israel publications for hiring an openly antisemitic freelance journalist after his posts had been unearthed last year.
Hijjy, a Palestinian filmmaker, published a photo of himself on Facebook in 2018 along with a caption that read: "in a state of harmony as Hitler was during the Holocaust."
He was hired by the New York Times as a freelance journalist that same year. Hijjy worked on multiple investigative projects which were published by the paper up until 2021.
In 2012, Hijjy published another post on Facebook. He shared a photoshopped image of Hitler appearing to take a selfie and wrote in the caption, "How great you are, Hitler."
