The State Department announced Wednesday that the US is prepared to remove sanctions on Iran in order to resume compliance with the Iran nuclear deal, including those that are 'inconsistent' with the 2015 pact.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the formal name for the Iran deal, "We are prepared to take the steps necessary to return to compliance with the JCPOA, including by lifting sanctions that are inconsistent with the JCPOA. I am not in a position here to give you chapter and verse on what those might be."
As of publishing, the White House has not commented and deferred to the State Department when contacted by multiple media outlets.
US and Iranian officials are currently engaged in indirect talks in Vienna and communicating through European intermediaries in an effort to revive the nuclear pact.
Following multiple violation of the deal by Iran, former President Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018, and reimposed sanctions on Iran. The Obama administration had placated the Iranian regime in order to get the deal done which included lifting sanctions and transferring $1.7 billion in cash made up of non-US currency.
The actions of the Obama administration emboldened the terrorist regime and funded their activities through proxies such as Hezbollah across the Middle East.
The destabilization of the region led to the historic Abraham Accords, US brokered peace deals between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Peace deals between Israel, Sudan, Morocco and Oman. One of the largest contributing factors to the accords was the shared concern of an Iranian terrorist regime which had been emboldened and financed by the Obama administration. The sanctions imposed by the Trump administration forced Iran to cut significant amounts of terrorist funding and decreased the frequency of attacks.
Since President Joe Biden took office and signaled his intent to reenter the Iran deal, tension have escalated in the region. Iran and their terrorist proxies have launched attacks on US bases in the region and against Israel.
Iran has stated that the regime would not return to 'compliance' of the deal until the US lifts sanctions. The Biden administration has insisted Iran prove that the terrorist regime is complying with the agreement before the US would offer sanction relief.
