A 6-year-old boy and his 3-year-old sister were attacked by their mother in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Taylor Gosnell, 35, stabbed her children more than 50 times. Both children suffered numerous injuries, some down to the bone, and remain in stable condition.
The children were found after a welfare check was conducted on the home by deputies who found them bleeding on September 26. The children's grandmother contacted authorities to check on the children after they called her and said they were hungry.
The children suffered lacerations to the bone. Dawson, who faced the majority of the injuries, may be facing an amputation as a result.
Gosnell returned to the residence while police were still on the scene. Police reported that the home was "in disarray" and that while Gosnell was there, she showed "behavior that raised concerns about her immediate well-being."
She was taken to an ambulance for evaluation but attempted to flee and had to be restrained. She was eventually cleared and released from the hospital. Gosnell has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Facility without bond.
Officers tried to question Gosnell but she declined and requested an attorney. She denied the charges against her. The children have been placed in protective custody.
An earlier version of this story stated that the children's paternal grandmother said that the 6-year-old boy attempted to protect his sister from their mother. It was later revealed that the woman was posing as the children's grandmother.
