Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is currently selling "Abolish ICE" t-shirts on her website's "team store". Meanwhile, arrests and deportations of people entering the US illegally are already way down since Biden's inauguration.
The shirt in question has a graphic of an ice machine, like the one found outside of corner stores all across the country, with red text above it saying "ABOLISH". It is available for $27.
"We must go bigger and bolder on reimagining our immigration system. The path forward is clear. We must abolish ICE," the caption advertising the t-shirt reads.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) chief Alejandro Mayorkas has stated that there needs to be changes, but is not clear even on whether those changes would lead to more or less enforcement by ICE.
"What those changes will be, I am wrestling with right now, quite frankly," Mayorkas was quoted as saying, according to Fox News.
Under current ICE rules, officers are only allowed to engage with people who has just crossed the border, "aggravated felons" (in itself not a clearly defined term), and others who represent a threat to national security. Prior official approval is required in all other cases before deportation proceedings can be commenced.
There is also a separate ban in effect from the Department of Homeland Security, disallowing ICE from operating anywhere near a courthouse.
As a result of the new measures, so far in April, there have been less than 3,000 deportations, which is down 20 percent from the previous month. Arrests are also down approximately 60 percent in April compared to January.
On the other side of things, 4782 migrants were released on their own recognizance into US territory in February. This figure jumped to 11,888 in March and further increased to 12,726 in April.
