ANDY NGO REPORTS: Portland Trans Antifa ‘Super Soldier’ convicted of assaulting a woman

Isabel Rosa Araujo (b. Aug 12, 1985), a man formerly known as Phillip Haskins-Delici, was charged with fourth-degree assault and unlawful use of mace stemming from a March 2024 attack on an Arab-American woman who burned a Quran in a protest in a park. The six-person jury unanimously convicted Araujo on both counts on Wednesday in the Multnomah County Courthouse.

Araujo, who has adopted the identities of being trans, “Latinx” and now Muslim, was filmed assaulting Sorbeah “Ara” Almosa on March 24, 2024 as she counter-protested a pro-Gaza march in Couch Park by burning her own copy of the Quran in a bowl she was carrying. Almosa is a Portland woman of Egyptian heritage.

“I feel like retaliation is headed my way,” Almosa, 38, said after learning about Araujo’s conviction. “The far-left are going to be coming after me harder than they were before.”

Araujo has been ordered not to have contact with the victim.

Araujo had escaped arrest for three months after the assault until July 2024 when Portland Police arrested him while he was at an Antifa direct action in downtown. Araujo was wearing a gas mask and dressed in black tactical riot gear. On his front side, he wore a patch of the Antifa red and black flags, along with the label stating, “Antifa Super Soldier." On the backside, a large patch declaring the same Antifa affiliation appeared in block letters.

Prosecutors faced several delays in bringing the case to trial. It was initially dismissed in January after Araujo’s defense claimed they had not received police body camera footage. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office refiled the case, leading to a three-day trial that began Aug. 4.

On Monday, just before jury selection began, Araujo had agreed to plead guilty in a sweetheart deal that would shorten his probation time. However, before the deal was signed and finalized, he rejected it after learning that he would be barred from carrying weapons, like mace, for a year. The trial then proceeded with six people, plus two alternates, being selected as jurors.

At the trial on Tuesday, which was presided over by Judge Adrian Brown, the defense brought up this journalist repeatedly in an attempt to suggest that the victim was someone deserving of the violence because of an alleged association with me. Defense attorney Justice Kelley falsely asserted to the court that this reporter was a “Proud Boy supporter.”

At one point, the trial was interrupted by a man who entered the courtroom and appeared to try to obscure his identity with a hat and hoodie. Security was increased for the remainder of the trial.

Kelley motioned for the case to be dismissed, stating this journalist is “harassing” Araujo in his ongoing reporting. He also asked the judge to override the jury and acquit Araujo, arguing that the defense couldn’t prove it was him who assaulted Almosa.

Judge Brown denied both motions.

The prosecution brought in four Portland Police officers and Almosa as witnesses. The jurors watched video of the assault as well as the body camera footage of the responding officer following the attack. The assault video captured one of Araujo’s Antifa comrades repeatedly calling him “Aspen,” Araujo’s alias used in Antifa activities. On Wednesday, the defense brought in an expert witness who challenge the reliability of a victim’s eyewitness identification and memory of an assailant.

Araujo has a long history of Antifa violent extremism. He had targeted this reporter several times with death threats since 2019 that were reported to law enforcement, though he was never charged.

In June 2024, Araujo posted the addresses of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland and the Mittleman Jewish Community Center.

“Do whatever you want with this publicly available information,” Araujo wrote, adding red upside-down triangle symbols that were used by Hamas to mark targets on the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attacks in Israel.

Araujo frequently posts about having a weapons cache. In a list posted on Instagram last year, he boasted about having nearly $700 worth of “pepper spray munitions for Zionists/Fash acting up," and claimed to have collapsible batons, knives and “other bladed weaponry.”

In 2022, Araujo used CashApp and Venmo to fundraise to buy weapons, including a collapsible baton and bowie knife, ahead of a Portland rally by British women’s rights activist Kellie-Jay Keen.
