The FBI seized Mayor Eric Adams's electronic devices as part of a federal probe into allegations that the New York mayor's 2021 campaign conspired with the Turkish government and others to receive illegal foreign campaign donations, according to the New York Times.
FBI agents reportedly secured a court-authorized warrant and seized the mayor's two cell phones and iPad after approaching him on the street and demanding his security detail to leave, according to the outlet. The seizures occurred earlier this week and his devices have since been returned.
Last week, the FBI executed a search warrant and raided the home of Mayor Adams's campaign consultant and top fundraiser Brianna Suggs, 25, in Brooklyn. The raid launched the beginning of a sweeping investigation into the Adams campaign.
The search warrant for Suggs's home, viewed by The New York Times, was looking to uncover if the campaign had engaged in a conspiracy with the Turkish government to accept illegal foreign donations. Authorities seized two laptop computers, three iPhones, and a manila folder labeled "Eric Adams" from her home.
Also under the federal microscope is a Brooklyn construction company that may be tied to Turkey, along with a university in Washington, DC, which may also be tied to Turkey and Adams.
A question asked by the FBI is "whether the mayor's campaign kicked back benefits to the construction company's officials and employees, and to Turkish officials," The New York Times reported.
Per the warrant, the concern is that foreign campaign contributions were made in the names of people who did not actually give donations to the campaign. "Investigators sought evidence to support potential charges that included the theft of federal funds and conspiracy to steal federal funds, wire fraud and wire fraud conspiracy, as well as campaign contributions by foreign nationals and conspiracy to make such contributions," per the Times.
Suggs was not arrested during the search and was only questioned. Mayor Adams was meeting with the Biden administration in Washington DC about the illegal immigration crisis when the news broke out. Adams has also not been arrested or officially accused of any wrongdoing.
Adams said that he held his campaign "to the highest ethical standards." He also said law enforcement had not contacted him specifically. Adams has made at least six or seven trips to Turkey while he was Brooklyn borough president, paid for by the Turkish government.
The Democrat New York mayor has not yet publicly commented on the FBI seizing his electronic devices.
