BREAKING: Explosion at NY Rainbow Bridge connecting US and Canada

According to WKBW, the bridge is closed in both directions after the incident involving a vehicle coming into the US.

A spokesperson for the Niagara Falls Mayor’s Office said the closure will be in place until further notice, and added that federal authorities are at the scene investigating.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul wrote on X, "I’ve been briefed on the incident on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls and we are closely monitoring the situation. State agencies are on site and ready to assist."

According to WIVB, the Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, and Whirlpool Bridge are also closed in both directions.

In a statement posted to X, the FBI’s Buffalo field office said that they are "investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, a border crossing between the US and Canada in Niagara Falls. The FBI is coordinating with out local, state, and federal law enforcement partners in this investigation. As this situation is very fluid, that’s all we can say at this time."

Ontario Premiere Doug Ford said that he has been made aware of the situation at the southern end of the Canadian province, adding that "our provincial law enforcement is actively engaged in assessing the situation. They are working with local law enforcement and are providing support as required."

Sources told Fox News that the two people who were inside the car are dead and explosives were in the vehicle at the time. One border officer was injured.

The sources said the pair was reportedly attempting to drive toward the border crossing’s border officer building, and the explosion was an attempted terrorist attack.
