Incumbent Senator Ashley Moody of Florida will keep her Senate seat. She faced Democratic Socialist challenger Angie Nixon in the election. The race was called around 8 pm on election night by Decision Desk.
The results a little after 8 pm showed that Moody had a little above 50 percent of the vote compared to Nixon’s 48.9 percent. Moody was endorsed by President Donald Trump.
Nixon emerged as a populist candidate in the Senate race and was part of the Democratic Socialists of America. She won a major upset against the more establishment Democrat Alex Vindman.
Nixon had stumped for universal healthcare, a $25 minimum wage, and other far-left policies. Moody had been appointed to the US Senate to fill the vacancy that was left by Marco Rubio when President Trump appointed him to be Secretary of State.
Ahead of the election, Moody said, “Voting is one of our greatest privileges as Americans and I encourage every eligible Floridian who has not yet voted to make their voice heard today!”
