View on XThe House GOP impeached Mayorkas in February and the motion faced many hurdles since it was first proposed.
It is alleged in the documents that Mayorkas "repeatedly violated laws enacted by Congress regarding immigration and border security" as well as "made false statements to Congress" saying that the border was safe and secure.
When Mayorkas was impeached in the House, he released a statement saying, "I assure you that your false accusations do not rattle me and do not divert me from the law enforcement and broader public service mission to which I have devoted most of my career and to which I remain devoted.”
The Democrat controlled Senate, however, is vying to dismiss the impeachment articles with some pushing for there not to be an impeachment trial at all, which would break years of precedent.
Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) touched on what not holding a trial could mean for breaking the long-held precedent on Monday.
