Donald Trump has chosen Howard Lutnick as his commerce secretary. Lutnick, who spoke at the RNC and led the financial services company in the dark days after September 11, 2001 when they lost hundreds of employees, including his own brother, when the World Trade Center fell, has been an outspoken proponent of Trump's leadership.
Trump announced the pick Tuesday, “I am thrilled to announce that Howard Lutnick, Chairman & CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, will join my Administration as the United States Secretary of Commerce. He will lead our Tariff and Trade agenda, with additional direct responsibility for the Office of the United States Trade Representative.”

View on X"The Office of the Secretary is the general management arm of the department and provides the principal support to the Secretary in formulating policy and in providing advice to the President," the government states. "It provides program leadership for the department's functions and exercises general supervision over the operating units. It also directly carries out program functions as may be assigned by the Secretary and provides – as determined to be more economical or efficient – administrative and other support services for designated operating units.”
"The Office of the Secretary consists of the Secretary, certain secretarial officers, designated staff immediately serving those officials and a number of offices which serve department-wide functions or perform program functions directly on behalf of the Secretary." The position has been held by Gina Raimondo under the Biden-Harris administration.
