Democrat James Talarico has won the US Senate race in Texas against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.
The race is a huge blow the GOP in the state, which has been in power in state-wide elections for years. The race was called by Decision Desk a little after 10 pm on Tuesday.
During the campaign, Talarico bent his message to appear more moderate after making statements such as “God is non-binary” and claiming that there are six sexes.
President Donald Trump had endorsed Paxton in the primary over incumbent John Cornyn, which some in the GOP establishment saw as a safer pick for the election due to some scandals that Paxton has been involved in, including a divorce from his wife last year on “biblical grounds.”
Talarico and Paxton never faced off on a debate stage during the race. The election was the most expensive non-presidential election on record, with over $500 billion being spent between both candidates.
