View on XChauvin was one of four officers involved in the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Monday. Floyd had been shopping, and left the store, when an employee called 911 to report that a man had passed a counterfeit $20.
Police were dispatched to the scene, where, following a description provided by the cashier, they detained Ford and secured him. While police had indicated after the fact that Ford was physically resisting arrest prior to the violence that caused his death, surveillance footage has emerged that contradicts this claim.
Chauvin was the officer who knelt on Floyd's neck, which suffocated and killed him.
It was after this incident that an outpouring of frustration and grief caused many to take to the streets of Minneapolis to protest. The US has seen the recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, both unarmed black persons, that have sparked strong emotions during the coronavirus lockdown restrictions. The names of both Taylor and Arbery have been shouted during protests.
Among those who advocated for the protestors actions is Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's daughter Isra Hirsi.
The protests, however, turned violent and destructive. Buildings in Minneapolis were set ablaze, stores were looted and destroyed, and one man was killed.
Violence and protests have sparked across the nation, in Los Angeles, Memphis, Louisville, New York, and Denver. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has dispatched National Guard troops to attempt to contain the situation in the Twin Cities.
The US currently has 40 million people who are out of work due to the economic shutdown caused by the coronavirus.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
