View on X"On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer," his children wrote in a post from his account on X. "He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."
Simpson, a promising athlete from a young age, began his football career at the University of Southern California, where he won the Heisman Trophy. He went on to play in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers.
As ABC News reports, in the late 70's he transitioned away from sports to acting, appearing in various movies, TV shows, and commercials.
Simpson married Nicole Brown in 1985, but the pair divorced seven years later. In 1994, she and her friend, Ron Goldman, were found dead in her LA home, and Simpson was named as a suspect. Following the now infamous chase in his white Ford Bronco, he was detained, and a put on trial for murder.
The following year, he was acquitted, however in 1997 a jury found him liable for wrongful death and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages. Ten years later, he was arrested yet again for breaking into a Las Vegas hotel room with a gun to steal sports memorabilia that he claimed belonged to him.
He was sentenced to 33 years in prison, but released on parole in 2017.
Simpson announced in 2023 that he had cancer, though he did not specify which type. He was quite active on social media, and gained a following on X.
He is survived by four children, and a number of grandchildren.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
