The brother of 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect behind the deadly New Year's Day attack in New Orleans, Abdur Jabbar, told the New York Times that they had been brought up Christian but Jabbar had converted to Islam long before the attack. "As far as I know he was a Muslim for most of his life. What he did does not represent Islam. This is more some type of radicalization, not religion."
Additionally, the FBI believes that the attack was inspired by ISIS after investigators discovered writings with the suspect. Sources told CNN that the writings further reinforce the theory that the attack was inspired by the terrorist group.
Jabbar drove a vehicle into a crowd of New Year's revelers on Bourbon Street, killing at least 10 people and injuring 30 others. Authorities also found an ISIS flag on the truck used in the attack. The FBI has stated that they do not believe he was “solely responsible” for the attack. Investigators are also working to find out whether to not Jabbar, who is a US citizen from Texas, has ties with terrorist organizations.
This is a developing story.
