An active shooter situation at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, has resulted in four people killed and at least 9 wounded, sources familiar with the matter confirmed to WSB-TV.
A source with knowledge of the situation told CNN that Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital had received two victims from the shooting, one is an adult with a gunshot wound to the stomach who was receiving surgery, and the other is a minor with unspecified injuries.
The incident began around 10:20 am when first responders were dispatched to the high school following reports of an active shooter. Authorities have one suspect in custody. At least six ambulances were at the scene and first responders loaded multiple victims, according to WSB-TV. Several individuals were reportedly being treated for gunshot wounds at a local hospital.
Apalachee High School has since been cleared for dismissal, but other schools in the Barrow County School District were placed on a “soft lockdown” as a precautionary measure.
"The Barrow County Sheriff's Office says this is for the safety of everyone right now. Please do not visit your child's school at this time. We cannot release students during a lockdown," explained the school district in a statement. “We will let you know as soon as BCSO says it is all clear for dismissal."
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp addressed the situation, saying he is “praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.” He also confirmed that he has directed “all available state resources to respond” to the incident.
