Secret Service agents assigned to protect President Joe Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi, opened fire on Sunday evening in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington DC late Sunday as three people reportedly attempted to break into an unmarked Secret Service vehicle.
A law enforcement official told the Associated Press that the agents saw three people breaking the window of the parked and unoccupied SUV.
One agent opened fire, but no one was struck. The three people were seen fleeing in a red car.
"During this encounter, a federal agent discharged a service weapon and it is believed no one was struck," a Secret Service spokesperson told ABC News. "The offenders immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle and a regional lookout was issued to supporting units. There was no threat to any protectees and the incident is being investigated by the DC Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service."
Carjackings have risen significantly in 2023, with police reporting more than 750 carjackings and more than 6,000 reports of stolen vehicles in the nation’s capital.
In early October, Rep. Henry Cuellar was carjacked at gunpoint outside of his Navy Yard apartment.
In response to the rise in carjackings, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has handed out AirTags to residents of certain districts so they can track their cars in the case of a carjacking to retrieve it, and the city has handed out wheel locks to residents.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
