According to Global News, the Trudeau government will be introducing extensive emergency powers to Finance Minister Bill Morneau to tax and spend without any parliamentary approval. The legislation will be introduced Tuesday.
Global reports that the "legislation includes 20 sections, one of which will create a new Public Health Events of National Concern Payments Act that would allow any cabinet minister with the approval of the finance minister to dispense 'all money required to do anything' in the event of a public health emergency."
The House of Commons is set to reconvene tomorrow with a small number of MPs attending.
Michelle Rempel, Conservative MP from Calgary - Nose Hill has responded to news of the proposed legislation by tweeting: "For all of you lighting my my inbox and phone lines, we haven't seen the final text yet. I won't be commenting until that point."
So far, Canada has 1,558 cases of coronavirus and 25 people have died. Earlier today, Prime Minister Trudeau told Canadians to "stay at home" or face the consequences of law enforcement.
