President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Will Scharf will become White House counsel and assistant to the president, taking over the administration’s top legal post on Sept. 1. Scharf, currently serving as White House staff secretary, will replace David Warrington, who is leaving the administration for the private sector after holding the counsel position since January 2025.
Trump praised Warrington for his “outstanding work” as White House counsel and as an attorney for Trump’s 2024 campaign. He also said Scharf has done an “amazing job” in his current positions. Scharf will move into the White House’s top legal role after overseeing administrative operations involving the Oval Office. He also chairs the National Capital Planning Commission, which approved plans for the president’s White House ballroom.
The incoming counsel has previously represented Trump in several legal matters, including cases that reached the Supreme Court. Scharf is also a former federal prosecutor who clerked for two federal appeals court judges before working as a private attorney.
He earned degrees from Princeton University and Harvard Law School.
