For all intents and purposes, Politico has issued a retraction of an explosive article from last week that claimed that President Donald Trump owed tens of millions of dollars to the Bank of China
The story claimed that the debt was linked to a real estate deal involving the Trump Organization from 2012.
In an editor's note, Politico admitted that the article entitled “Trump owes tens of millions to the Bank of China–and the loan is due soon.” was incorrect.
"On Friday evening, Politico received a statement from a representative for Bank of China USA, which had not been contacted beforehand, that the bank had sold off, or securitized, its debt shortly after the 2012 deal ... A spokeswoman said the bank has no current financial interest in any Trump Organization properties." the editor's note said.
In other words, it turns out the tens of millions that Trump reportedly owed to the Bank of China was non-existent and the story was completely false. By the time of correction, the disinformation had already been shared by bluecheck journalists and pundits like MSNBC's Kyle Griffin on social media. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden also repeated the false claim on television.

View on X"Politico attempted to reach other parties to the refinancing throughout the weekend and Monday. Consequently, the story was updated a second time on Monday evening to take account of the apparent mistake in the public record," the editor's note went on to say.
