When news broke on Saturday that members of Iranian-backed Palestinian terrorist group Hamas had indiscriminately massacred Israeli civilians, many took to social media to voice their opinion. Among them was Derron Borders, the diversity and inclusion director at Cornell University's Johnson School of Management. Instead of condemning the attacks, however, he shared a post that referred to Hamas' actions as "resistance."
Borders was widely criticized over his actions, and has since released a statement claiming that he does not, in fact, support Hamas.
Screenshots obtained by the New York Post reveal that the post Borders shared was from an account called "decolonizethisplace." As of Wednesday, the original post has been liked nearly 40,000 times.
"When you hear about Israel this morning and the resistance being launched by Palestinians, remember against all odds Palestinians are fighting for life, dignity, and freedom — alongside others doing the same — against settler colonization, imperialism, capitalism, white supremacy, which the United States is the model," the post read.
Subsequent posts from the account have suggested Israel had launched a counter-attack on Gaza "because it was embarrassed by the Palestinian resistance," and was now engaged in "state terrorism."
In addition to sharing the post, Borders wrote on his Instagram story, "F–k your fake outrage at Palestine when you’ve literally been silent about the violence perpetuated by Israel against Palestine every day."
On Monday, he released a statement clarifying his position.
"The atrocities and violence towards innocent people in Israel is absolutely horrifying and should be condemned," he wrote, adding, "the state-sanctioned violence and denial of self-determination for the Palestinian people by the Israeli government is also terrible and should be condemned."
Borders was slammed for his response to the tragedies that unfolded over the weekend.

RIMAR Capital CEO Itai Liptz pointed out that posts like those shared by Borders often "incite hatred and promote terror at a time like this," adding that the situation was "especially saddening given Mr Borders position, which is one of influence and one that is expected to promote inclusion and harmony."
In a statement to the Post, Cornell said it was aware of the posts, but that Borders was "an employee who has been on a leave of absence from the university for several months."
