Disney thanks China for letting them film Mulan near site of Muslim concentration camps

Today, both social and mainstream media are replete with accusations of Disney turning a blind eye, or even being complicit, in the continued massive and egregious human rights abuses in China.

Disney goes out of their way in the credits to thank several Chinese entities that are, among other things, facing US and possible global sanctions for their actions regarding the Uighurs, a Turkic Muslim ethnic minority within China.

These entities include the Chinese Communist Party itself, as well as its propaganda commission in Xinjiang, which is facing serious accusations of disseminating disinformation on the subject of Xinjiang’s increasingly notorious detention camps.

Also mentioned is the Xinjiang public security bureau, which is currently under sanctions from the US government. Within China it’s classified as a private company, but it has deep and broad ties to the CCP, as all Chinese companies with over 50 employees do.

The film, although partially set and partially filmed in the Xinjiang region, only mentions it as “Northwest China”, in an attempt to deny the unique Asian Muslim cultural identity of Xinjiang (also known as East Turkistan).

Nowhere in the remake of the film are Uighurs even mentioned, and no Uighur actors were used in the film, not even as extras.

There is speculation by critics that Disney has turned a blind eye to Chinese government atrocities in Xinjiang in order to access China’s potentially lucrative market for the film.

Disney has not commented on the issue.
