Far-left New York lawyers plead guilty to Molotov cocktail attack during George Floyd riots

Prosecutors stated that Urooj Rahman, one of the lawyers, threw a a gasoline-filled bottle into an empty police cruiser and attempted to distribute Molotov cocktails to others in the crowd. Rahman then fled the scene in a minivan driven by Colinford Mattis, according to Reuters.

32-year-old Rahman and 34-year-old Mattis plead guilty to a single count of possessing or making a destructive device each in a Brooklyn court.

"I deeply regret my conduct and wish I had made better choices on that night," Mattis said. Rahman also reportedly expressed regret for their actions.

Both layers acknowledged that their actions and subsequent sentencing would likely result in their disbarment.

Mattis previously served as an associate at Pryor Cashman, but was furloughed in April 2020 in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic. He was suspended following his arrest. Rahman served as a public interest lawyer, defending tenants in the Bronx.

"US District Judge Brian Cogan set their sentencing for Feb. 8. They face up to 10 years in prison under a terrorism-related sentencing provision," wrote Reuters.

"The terrorism enhancement is going to be a big issue. I have no idea where I'm going to come out on that," Cogan said.

Paul Shechtman, Rahman's lawyer, said the duo "do not deserve a prison sentence for conduct that occurred in the heat of the moment on one of the most heated nights in modern American history."

Riots broke out in New York City and across the country in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis, resulting in an estimated over $2 billion in damages in the US.
