Google announced Wednesday the removal of their global lead on diversity strategy and research from his post after backlash from recently discovered antisemitic statements in a past blog post.
However, instead of firing the employee, Google transferred him to a STEM-focused role. Kamau Bobb will be reassigned to a STEM research role following backlash against the company after The Washington Free Beacon discovered a 2007 blog post by Bobb titled "If I were a Jew."
The now deleted blog post read, "If I were a Jew I would be concerned about my insatiable appetite for war and killing in defense of myself. "If I were a Jew today, my sensibilities would be tormented. I would find it increasingly difficult to reconcile the long cycles of oppression that Jewish people have endured and the insatiable appetite for vengeful violence that Israel, my homeland, has now acquired."
The post was written following a clash between Israel and the terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2007.
"I don't know how I would reconcile that identity with the behavior of fundamentalist Jewish extremists or of Israel as a nation. The details would confuse me. I wouldn't understand those who suggest that bombing Lebanon, slaughtering Lebanese people, and largely destroying Beirut in retaliation for the capture of a few soldiers is justified," Bobb continued.
He wrote as if he was a Jewish man in modern times and mentioned that it was nearly 80 years after Kristallnacht in order to make a loose comparison to the Jewish identity.
Bobb’s site itself is still regularly updated. In April 2021 he wrote a blog post about racial tensions in the USA. There’s nothing in there about last month’s conflict between Israel and Hamas forces in Gaza.
There’s also nothing in the blog about the international antisemitic attacks in the aftermath of the conflict such as pro-Palestinians throwing incendiary devices in New York’s Diamond District, ambushing restaurant-goers in Los Angeles, and shouting obscenities about people of Jewish faith while driving around the streets of London.
After the post was revealed multiple Jewish groups, including the Simon Weisenthal Center and Stop Antisemitism, called for Bobb to be fired.
