Three Louisiana teens have been sentenced to 20 years in prison for their involvement in the carjacking death of an elderly woman. Briniyah Baker, Lenyra Theophile, and Mar'Qel Curtis, all of whom are 17 or under, were originally hit with second-degree murder charges, but reached a plea deal with prosecutors on reduced charges of attempted manslaughter.
A fourth suspect, 18-year-old John Honore, had his second-degree murder charge upheld, and could face up to life in prison if found guilty of killing 73-year-old Linda Frickey.
According to the Daily Mail, two of the girls said they were sorry for their actions, and while Frickey's sister Jinnylynn Griffin said she believed them, they nonetheless "did it and have to serve the time."
"The girls, they were all there for the ride, but the issue we had with them is they didn't do anything to stop it," she added.
In regards to Honore, Griffin said that she and Frickey's family "want him to get the maximum," noting that, "He drove the car. He stomped on her."
As 4WWL reports, the incident took place around 1:30 p.m. on March 21, 2022 outside a shop in New Orleans' Mid-City neighborhood. As she was putting something in her vehicle, the teens jumped in, with Honore kicking her out.
As she fell out of the vehicle, her arm got caught in the wheel well and she was dragged for nearly a block before finally becoming dislodged.
New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Shaun Ferguson explained that Frickey's arm was found "severed from her body," with an eyewitness adding that they "heard screaming, like 'you're about to die screaming'."
Her vehicle was discovered 13 blocks away, however by the time authorities showed up, the teens had fled the scene. Two of them were quickly turned in by their parents, while the others were apprehended a short time later.
A jury for Honore's trial was recently selected, and proceedings are set to begin on Nov. 27, per the Daily Mail.
