Ilhan Omar’s name on search warrant filings matches ex-husband Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, alleged to be her brother with whom she committed immigration fraud: court docs
This comes after her home was raided in an immigration investigation earlier this month.
It has been revealed that Ilhan Omar's legal name has the same surname of the man that she married in 2009, who some have alleged was actually her brother.
Court documents related to the search warrant for Omar's home that took place earlier this month stated, "Before the Court are three Applications to unseal ex parte materials and proceedings related to a federal search warrant for the personal residence in the District of Columbia of Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar."
Omar has denied allegations that she married her brother in 2009 for immigration purposes. Ahmed Elmi, the man that she wed at the time, has the same surname as Omar does on legal documents, which has fueled theories about the marriage years after the fact. Omar's family's background has been fractured across countries and she has claimed that paperwork for her family tree was lost or destroyed in Somalia.
Elmi currently lives in London and although his family tree is not known, he lives with a Somali woman named Leila Nur Said, who is believed to be Omar's sister, per the New York Post. The man she married in 2009 has the same name as her brother. They later divorced in 2017. This was after Omar was religiously married to Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in 2002, with whom she had three children.
Omar has said that although Hirsi and her got together in 2002, with the legal paperwork they "never finalized the application and thus were never legally married" despite the religious ceremony. The legal 2009 marriage, however, was reportedly performed by a Christian minister.
The Democrat lawmaker has said that she and Hirsi separated in 2008 and then reconciled in 2012, and then got legally married in 2018. They had three children together in 2003, 2005, and 2012. But from 2007 to 2017, Omar was legally married to Elmi. She claims they split in 2011, but that it took years to finalize the paperwork. She has also claimed that she conceived the third child with Hirsi long after splitting with Elmi, before the divorce from Elmi was finalized.
Omar and Hirsi later divorced in 2019 and she married Democrat political consultant Tim Mynett after allegations that she was having an affair with him. That same year, Elmi withdrew a marriage-based green card application that he had filed. It has been reported that the withdrawal took place after there were questions raised by immigration authorities about the marriage.
The recent revelations come after immigration authorities raided Omar's home earlier this month as part of an investigation into the lawmaker's immigration status. She is also being subject to a financial investigation at the same time.
