Illegal immigrant teen pleads not guilty to charges of attempted murder of NYPD officer

Jesus Rivas-Figueroa, 15, allegedly shot a tourist before fleeing the scene, where he proceeded to fire his weapon at officers who pursued him.

According to FOX5NY, Rivas-Figueroa will remain in jail without bail.

He was charged as an adult with two counts of attempted murder, assault, attempted assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the incident, which took place on February 8.

The tourist, who was set to return home to Brazil just days later, was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where she received 13 stitches in her leg.

A criminal complaint alleged that following the shooting, Rivas-Figueroa "returned to his home, and he and his mother immediately began to flee."

"They packed up all their belongings and by 6 am the next morning had vacated their home and fled out of the city," it stated, noting they were eventually caught at a house in Yonkers, New York "where he was hiding behind a wardrobe in a further attempt to evade police."

"Based on all of this," the complaint added, "it's clear that he is facing a significant sentence of incarceration on this serious case and can not be trusted to return to court."

While being arrested, Rivas-Figueroa cried as his mother wept uncontrolably in the background.

The teen, who has only been in the United States since September, was also the suspect in a January 25 shooting in midtown Manhattan and a January 27 armed robbery in the Bronx.
