Justin Trudeau routinely CRIED during cabinet meetings, new book reveals

Freeland also notes that Trudeau would freak out when colleagues and cabinet members would use non-work terminology, such as saying "crazy" instead of the term "bananas" so as not to denigrate actual insane people.

The Hamilton Spectator, for which Andrew Phillips read the book so the rest of us don't have to, brought the passage about crying to light. Phillips writes that "Kleenex was kept on hand for ministers overcome with emotion" and that "some would get hugs from the PM."

He goes on to say that Freeland was "appalled when Trudeau openly bullied people around him and policed the language used at the cabinet table. In the book, Freeland notes that "a very progressive female colleague" called something "crazy" and received a "long, harsh public scolding from Trudeau." He suggested that people use the term "bananas," instead, so that people who actually have mental health problems weren't offended.

Freeland, Phillips writes, wasn't on board with the tone policing and virtue signalling. She wrote that this kind of thing makes people think "that their leaders are more focused on the performance of virtue than on actually improving people's lives."

She backs Trudeau in the book, saying that "history will be kind" to the former Canadian leader-turned-pop star Katie Perry's boyfriend. "Love him or loathe him," Freeland writes, "you could not deny that he was a leader with balls." But she also said that his interactions with constituents and colleagues were always surface. She said he kept his distance with "anyone who might come close to being a peer," especially cabinet members.

The book is "part memoir, part political polemic," The Globe and Mail writes. And who is the "unreliable boyfriend" of the title? The United States of America. She critiques Canada's neighbor and closest ally to the south, saying that while Trump can be "appealing and fun" and was right to question globalization, the US "played the part of a Father Knows Best, 1950s-style patriarch to his allied wives" and has now become, well, unreliable as to his leadership of the family.
