Most Americans support Israel: Wall Street Journal poll

The poll found that 55 percent of Americans said Israel is "taking the military action needed to defend itself and prevent Hamas from attacking it again." Just 25 percent of Americans said that Israel’s "military action is disproportionate and going too far in its response to the Hamas attack."

42 percent of Americans said that they sympathize with the Israeli people more than the Palestinians, with 33 percent saying they strongly sympathize with the Israelis and 9 percent saying they somewhat sympathize. 33 percent of Americans said they sympathize with both the same, and 12 percent said they sympathize with the Palestinians. An additional 7 percent said they sympathize with neither group, and 7 percent did not know.

The majority of Republican respondents said that Israel is taking the action needed to defend itself against the terrorist group, as well as a slight majority of independents. Nearly half of Democrat respondents said that Israel’s military actions are disproportionate.

The poll was conducted between Nov. 29 and Dec. 4 and sampled 1,500 registered US voters.

This comes as Democrat lawmakers have called for a ceasefire between Israel and the terrorist group, and have said that the nation of Israel is an 'apartheid' state.

Those who haven’t spoken out against Israel defending itself have been the target of vandalism and protest, with Democrat Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s office in November being the target of a sit-in protest, and Democrat Rep. Adam Smith’s home being vandalized with anti-Israel messaging at the beginning of December.
