Most non-homeowners in Canada say they have given up on owning one: poll

This 63-percent figure is culled from the subset of those polled who don't already own at least one property.

Furthermore, slightly over two-thirds of all Canadians surveyed, or 67 percent, agreed with the statement that "owning a home is only for the rich."

The poll also found that 77 percent of Canadians think that "owning a home is the best investment a person can make." However, 77 percent of those polled also agreed to some extent or other with the statement that "it is possible to be financially secure and not own a home."

In addition, a majority of Canadians believe that the Trudeau administration is not doing enough to combat ballooning housing prices, despite recent measures taken. It's well-known that many Canadians are deeply concerned about other issues directly jacking up home prices, such as deep and widespread inflation.

The Ipsos report goes on to report that "many who feel that home ownership might be out of reach have changed their frame of mind and are looking to embrace other aspects of life instead."

"Six in ten (59%) non-owners agree (12% strongly/47% somewhat) that since owning a home is so far out of reach for them, they’re considering focusing less on earning money and more on enjoying themselves," continues the page on their website, also noting that this, perhaps surprisingly, is more common among people 55 years old or older."

Ipsos indicates the following technical info regarding the poll:

"For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters."

"The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population."

"All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error."
