On Wednesday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced the release of the highly anticipated January 6 tapes. The Georgia congresswoman revealed that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will be giving two journalists and a "third outlet" access to the thousands of hours of footage Twitter Files style, adding that their reporting on it would soon be shared with the public.
Greene had previously vowed to release the footage "to the people," leading some to question why a select group of media figures had been given the opportunity to become middlemen between the content and the masses.

View on X"I'm excited to share the good news that just as I promised the J6 tapes are being released!" Greene tweeted, explaining that McCarthy had given Just the News' John Solomon, American Greatness' Julie Kelly, and a third outlet "unfettered access to the J6 tapes."
"This is the transparency the American people deserve and I look forward to their reporting!" she added.

View on XWhile the reaction to Greene's announcement was largely positive, some were less than satisfied with the decision to involve journalists.
"The promise was to release it to the public," prominent right-wing Twitter personality Catturd said. "Releasing it to 3 members of the press is a million miles away from that ... Tired of these games."
Greene responded to the criticism by explaining that it was in the best interest of those involved in the riot that the footage not be made public in its entirety.
"I would love for everyone to be able to see the J6 tapes," she said, "except the funded Antifa internet trolls that can't wait to comb through every ounce of video with facial recognition software in order to doxx every person that simply stood on the Capitol grounds that day."
She went on to suggest that if that were to happen, the trolls would "ruin their lives," the FBI would "raid their homes in the middle of the night," and the DOJ would "persecute them mercilessly."

McCarthy originally granted former Fox News host Tucker Carlson access to the tapes, however only a small portion was shared on his show before it was canceled.
