Portland Police Chief Bob Day released an open letter to the public on Tuesday, reiterating the department's commitment to and requirement of not aiding efforts to combat illegal immigration. Oregon has been a sanctuary state since 1987 and according to state law, Portland police have no legal authority to help in immigration enforcement, according to Fox 12.

View on XNewsweek reported on Sunday that an illegal immigrant near Portland was encountered and detained during a DEA investigation. No other reports of ICE activity have been made public yet.
Day continued, “I take great pride in PPB’s community engagement and continuous efforts over the years. We have long-standing relationships within the immigrant communities and Portland-based organizations that advocate and serve these families. In addition, members of the Police Bureau are continuing outreach efforts to build relationships, especially in communities that may be distrustful of police.”
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek recently reiterated the city and state’s commitment to sanctuary status.
Last week, the Department of Justice ordered federal prosecutors to investigate state or local officials who they believe are interfering with the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
