San Francisco hires overweight ‘fat activist’ to give guidance on ‘weight stigma’

Tovar, 42, wrote in the post: "I'm working with a team at the San Francisco Department of Public Health as a consultant on weight stigma & weight neutrality." She added: "I'm UNBELIEVABLY proud to serve the city I've called home for almost 20 years in this way. This consultancy is an absolute dream come true, and it's my biggest hope and belief that weight neutrality will be the future of public health."

Tovar, who has a master's degree in sexuality studies from San Francisco State University, is an activist who is dedicated to the fight against weight discrimination and dieting. The Blaze reported that she is the author of several books such as "You Have the Right to Remain Fat" and "The Self-Love Revolution: Radical Body Positivity for Girls of Color."

Tovar explained her campaign against unrealistic thin beauty standards in a 2017 interview unearthed by the publication.

"I was born a fat person into a fat-hating culture," she said. "I'd made myself sick trying to lose weight. Even when I was trying my hardest, I wasn't anywhere near a weight where people would say I was normal. This work felt like the only way I could survive. I wasn't going to live a life of shame anymore."

Tovar posted on her Instagram that in recent years she has gone "no contact" with her family. Her page is filled with content about how to throw size-inclusive holiday parties, the problem with diet drug Ozempic, and commentaries on the politics of fatness.

It's unclear how much Tovar will be getting paid for her new role. The Post Millennial reached out to the City of San Francisco for comment.
