Shooting in Buffalo, NY leaves 10 dead

Eyewitnesses from the scene describe the assailant as a white male wearing camo-colored body armor, a helmet, and holding what looks like an assault rifle. Law enforcement say he arrived at Tops Friendly Markets around 2:30 p.m., and began to fire at customers in and around the store.

Braedyn Kephart and Shane Hill, two customers who had pulled into the parking lot as the shooting came to an end, reportedly saw the shooter exit the store, take off his helmet, drop his rifle, and fall to his knees just before police tackled him.

"He was standing there with the gun to his chin. We were like 'what the heck is going on? Why does this kid have a gun to his face?'" Kephart told the Associated Press.

Officials from the Buffalo Police Department have not yet released details on the identity of the shooter or how many people were injured besides the 10 fatalities.

At least one other victim is known to be in critical condition. Five bodies have been found in the parking lot outside of establishment. Police have recovered at least two firearms from the site of the attack.

Governor of New York Kathy Hochul tweeted a statement saying they're paying close attention to the situation and working with law enforcement to determine the details.

Investigators believe the assault may have been racially motivated, and think the shooting may have been live-streamed online.

Tops Friendly Markets spokesperson Kathleen A. Sautter extended her condolences to the victims' family and friends.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families," Sautter said.

"Our top priority remains the health and well-being of our associates and customers. We appreciate the quick response of local law enforcement and are providing all available resources to assist authorities in the ongoing investigation."
