A suspect who allegedly smeared human feces on a New York City subway rider’s face was released without bail on Wednesday in another case in which he faces hate crime charges.
According to a criminal complaint, Frank Abrokwa, 37, was in court for the second time in two days. He is facing charges for allegedly spitting on a Jewish man on September 9, 2021 in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights. Abrokwa was released without bail under New York's new bail reform laws, which prohibits the the cash bail option for many charges, according to authorities. Abrowka has nearly two dozen unsealed arrests dating back to 1999, including for assault, as recently as January and February, according to the Post.
A spokesman for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office told the Post that despite prosecutors' request that Abrokwa be held on $15,000 bond or $5,000 cash, he was freed on supervised release Tuesday night in the excrement attack because the charges were also not bail-eligible.
It was after he was released on those charges that police arrested Abrowka in connection to the hate crime case.
