Eight Mexico state police and five detectives for the Attorney General's office in Mexico were killed on Thursday afternoon in the municipality of Coatepec Harinas.
It is thought that this was a revenge attack for a law enforcement operation which had previously occurred on Tuesday in Zacualpan, another town 40 km away from Coatepec Harinas, which in turn is some 120 km southwest of Mexico City.
According to Mexico News Daily, the sting operation was a joint effort involving the police and the military, and seized vehicles and sensitive information of the Familia Michoacana, a new cartel that has a strong presence in the area.
Allegedly, authorities now have their hands on a notebook detailing the exact location of all the Familia's bases in the area and other sensitive information of an almost military-like nature.
The operation didn't, however, result in any arrests or violent actions on either part.
This brings the total amount of police officers killed in Mexico this year to 99. This is also the deadliest incident in over a year and a half, since Oct. 2019, when 14 law enforcment officials were killed in a similar ambush in Michoacan state.
Rodrigo Martinez-Celis Wogau said that the ambush will be responded to with "total force and the support of the law."
