The federal government reduced the amount it pays to disabled veterans by roughly $18-billion between 2019-2023 as a result of abandoning the fairly popular lifetime pension promise, according to a new report by the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO).
The plan interestingly increases benefits slightly for most veterans, while also noticeably cutting it for the most disabled.
The cuts are so severe that according to the PBO's own chart, some could lose out on hundreds of thousands of dollars over their lifetimes.
Roughly five percent of veterans, all of which are severely wounded, will receive less, while three percent receive hundreds of thousands of dollars less.
The report also shows just how clearly the Liberal government has failed on their promise to return the veteran's pensions back to pre-2006 levels, with spending remaining almost $20 billion less than what hopeful supporters would have expected.
Then again, what do you expect from a government which has "left more than $372 million meant to help veterans and their families unspent since taking office in November 2015."
