WATCH: Biden sought the presidency because ‘people’s fundamental rights were being violated’ by Trump
“The president ran for office because he thought that people’s fundamental rights were being violated by the last president,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.
White House Press Sec. Jen Psaki answered questions on election integrity laws at a briefing on Thursday, saying that "the president ran for office because he thought that people's fundamental rights were being violated by the last president."
Psaki did not expand on what those rights were, or in what way believes President Trump violated American's rights.
Psaki was pushing the Biden administration's agenda on enacting sweeping voting reform from the federal level, and the Democrats' plan to dismantle the filibuster in the US Congress.
"Voting rights and racial equality is [sic] central to what he wants to do as President," Psaki said.
"So, he has already taken a number of steps; he will continue to advocate for the For The People Act, which every Democrat voted to advance after he worked the phones, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act."
"He and the Vice President," she continued, "have launched an all-of-government effort to protect and advance voting rights in every way we can through the executive branch, after his executive order, and the White House Counsel's Office, legislative team, public engagement team and the domestic policy team all remain very engaged on."
"So, he is going to use every lever at his disposal. He is going to continue to elevate these issues. But he does not alone make changes, or have an official role in making changes to procedures in the Senate."
