WATCH: Brian Stelter says CNN covered Andrew Cuomo ‘just the same’ as ‘any other story’
“There was a wide range of opinions, and overall, I think what was most important is that we covered the story on air just the same we would any other story,” Stelter told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.
CNN's Brian Stelter joined The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday to explain that despite former Governor Andrew Cuomo's brother Chris Cuomo being a major player at CNN, with a prime time news show, and Chris' having been a secret advisor to his brother in the months of scandals that plagued him leading up to his resignation, CNN covered Andrew Cuomo "just the same" as "any other story."
New York governor Andrew Cuomo resigned on Tuesday following New York attorney general Leticia James' concluded investigations into sexual assault allegations.
"There was a wide range of opinions, and overall, I think what was most important is that we covered the story on air just the same we would any other story," Stelter said.
Colbert questioned Stelter on a report from The New York Times which claims the CNN anchor was helping his brother's communications team after sexual assault allegations were brought to light and asked if it was a conflict of interest.
"Well they admitted he screwed up. They said, 'you know what you did was inappropriate. You were on the phone with your brother's aides, advising them on what to do, and that was inappropriate,'" Stelter said. "But they said, 'of course you're going to talk to your brother.'"
"It is an odd conflict but if we open up the journalism ethics there's no page for this," Stelter continued.
"It's the craziest set of circumstances you can imagine, right? A governor and a brother, both in these high profile jobs. This was definitely awkward for CNN though. I tried to go into this thinking, 'Okay. If I was going to cover this at CBS, how would I cover it and try to cover it the same way.'"
"I talked to a lot of sources at CNN, some said, 'Yeah, this is really weird, I'm ticked off.' Others said, 'You know, I understand you can't pick who your family members are.' So there was a wide range of opinions," CNN's Brian Stelter told The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday.
